Week of April 9th, 2013
Welcome back to school! I hope everybody's Easter break was enjoyable and gave you the opportunity to reflect on Jesus Christ's sacrifice for us!
Here's what's going on this week:
Language Arts
This week we have started a unit on poetry. The students are making their own poetry books which they will need to work each night. Everyday we are working on a different type of poem. If your child needs extra help writing their poem, please refer to the following website as a resource for poetry writing: http://www.kathimitchell.com/poemtypes.html
Soon we will be reading the book Holes by Louis Sachar. Please be sure to secure yourself a copy as soon as possible. If you are unable, please let me know and I will get one for you.

In math, we are continuing Topic 12 and furthering our understanding of fractions. Currently we are working on multiplying and dividing mixed numbers. Please look through the following websites to gain additional support & practice:

In Language Arts we are continuing Theme 6, Animal Encounters. We are starting and ending our final selection of the theme this week, "My Side of the Mountain". You can find the new spelling & vocabulary words at the right of the blog. Following Easter Break we will be starting the novel, Holes, by Louis Sachar. Please secure a copy from either your local library or bookstore by the time school resumes.
Social Studies
Students have just been assigned their final projects for the American Revolution Unit in Social Studies. They are to choose from three options and turn in their completed project on Wednesday, March 27th. Students can choose from creating a timeline, making a battle map & chart, or creating a Prezi or PowerPoint presentation. Specific requirements can be found for the project on the handout distributed in class. The following websites may help in acquiring the necessary information:

We have finished our animal research reports and we're moving on to a new theme in our Reading Program, "Animal Encounters". Our first selection is titled "The Grizzly Bear Family Book". You'll find the new spelling and vocabulary words at the side of the blog.
Religion
Don't forget that we are entering a very important part of church history! We are electing a new Pope! The Cardinals will be entering the Papal Conclave (as we discussed in class) and will start the long, detailed voting process. What characteristics do you think a good Pope needs to have?
Also, don't forget to keep up the good work with your Lenten sacrifices! '
