Week of January 16, 2012

Hello students & parents,

Welcome back from the long weekend! Here's what we have in store in the coming weeks:
  • Friday is noon dismissal
  • Next Wednesday, January 25th, is mass with the 1st grade
  • The Spelling Bee is the week of January 30th, also Catholic Schools Week
Language Arts
In Language Arts, we have taken a break from our Houghton Mifflin Reading Program and have started a writing workshop wherein we are working on Persuasive Essays. The students have chosen their own topics and it is their job to convince the reader to believe what they do throughout the essay. Your child should be completing a new draft with corrections from the day's peer editing workshop each night. Visit the following websites for help with Persuasive Essay writing at home:
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we are studying the original 13 English Colonies in the Americas. We have studied the geography of the colonies as well as the New England Colonies. This week we will be learning about the Middle Colonies, and eventually the Southern. Visit the following websites for some 13 colony fun!

Let's have a great week and remember the values Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us!

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." -MLK

    Say No to Homework!

Homework is a waste if supplies such as ink, paper, and pencils. We try to save trees but all we’re doing is wasting trees, and also the paper, and pencils that we use everyday. We always sharpen our pencils everyday and it wastes trees and also we throw away the pencils when it has no more led or when there’s not an eraser.
Homework is a waste of time, and keeps you from doing other activities. Also keeps us from going to other places and spending time with our families. Such as playing basketball, riding your bike or playing games. Sometimes we are too lazy to do homework because it wastes our time.
Homework takes too long to finish, and it’s a waste of ink, too. Homework is so stressful that some kids drop out of schools because they spend too much time thinking of doing enjoyable things. The kids that drop out they drop out because the homework is too hard, and they don’t understand the homework that the teachers gave them. When you do not do your homework it stresses out the teacher, yourself and your parents.
We need more relaxation when we get out of school. If we do not have homework it will be better because we can relax more, and we need to spend more time with our family. When you do homework you spend more time writing and thinking. But you could be sleeping or sitting on the couch watching a new episode like H2O, House of Anubis, The Ellen DeGeneres show, Shake it up, Good Luck Charlie, Jessie, and other TV shows.
Homework usually requires help form a family member, so it wastes their time, too. And if your family members speak Spanish and you only speak English they can’t help you. They can’t help you because they don’t understand you and you don’t understand them. Sometimes your mom or dad is always busy working and they can’t help you. If you have to do your homework everyday by yourself and you don’t understand it the next day you have to go to school and tell your teacher. But the teacher will sometimes not believe you or believe you and they have to help you on the subject.

Everyday you learn in class, so why can’t you just keep learning instead of doing homework? It takes up too much time everyday and it leaves you barely any time to play. Sometimes you don’t feel like doing it because it is too much work to do, and other times you have to practice for a spelling test, or a math test, and there is not enough time. Instead of studying for a test at home you can just do it at class with a classmate. If we just learn in class it will be better because you don’t have to worry about doing your homework. When you’re doing your homework it is just a review so you learned it at school already. And if we study in our classrooms we will do better on the test because some people don’t study at school.
